LISTEN, LEARN AND ACT:

LISTEN, LEARN AND ACT:

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

OneAmerica® is more than the name of our company. It’s what we’re working to build through our reliance on strong relationships and our vision of being there for those who need us.

We’re advancing diversity of all types, at all levels and across all facets of our business, because it makes us stronger, more innovative, resilient and competitive. And, as a values-based provider of financial services, we’re uniquely positioned to drive economic empowerment and equality for all our stakeholders, especially those in underserved communities.

Our approach to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is to listen, learn and act. And our operating principles are:

  • Recognize past injustices and inequities as important context and inspiration for action.
  • Refrain from assigning blame; instead, demonstrate grace and create opportunities to learn together.
  • Challenge bias and inspire change by engaging with one another to seek feedback and create clarity.
  • Relentlessly innovate; continue to learn, reflect and adjust.

Our Priorities

The OneAmerica DEI strategy focuses on furthering our own equitable and inclusive workplace and culture. We’re committed to continuously improving within our company, while also making concrete differences for underserved communities in the areas of:

  • Workforce and career development
  • Economic empowerment
  • Expanded access to affordable financial security and protection

Our strategy is informed by key collaborations, including with the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) and The American College of Financial Services (TAC).

Our Progress

“Our commitment to listen, learn and act is creating greater opportunities to connect with our associates, customers, distribution partners and the community in a more meaningful way.”

KIM THOMAS
Vice President, DEI

We’ve conducted DEI-focused listening sessions with our workforce, and we’re providing ongoing training and education sessions to help build stronger connections and advance our work. We’re establishing business resource groups and we’ve ensured that our enterprise-wide Talent and Culture Ambassador Group is comprised of associates with diverse backgrounds and experiences so we may apply a DEI lens on the priorities that are essential to our culture.

Our DEI efforts extend beyond our associates and culture to embrace our customers, distribution partners and community organizations.

We’ve doubled our investments in innovative community-based programs that address such root causes of racism and inequality as poverty, education and access to jobs.

We’re particularly proud of our Pathways Program, which began in 2018 as a way to ensure that every OneAmerica job is a good job, and has expanded to provide underserved high school students and recent graduates a chance to learn about our industry and gain important work skills. We’re excited to share the Pathways’ blueprint with other employers, and were honored to receive the Excellence in Youth Employment award in August 2021 during the Indianapolis Mayor’s Celebration of Diversity event.

We’re an active participant in the ACLI’s Economic Empowerment & Racial Equity initiative, TAC’s Four Steps Forward program and the Business Equity for Indy effort, along with other local and national programs to address inequities and disparities in underserved communities.

Our Promise

OneAmerica is on a path to intentionally advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in our company, among our stakeholders and in the communities where we live and work.

Even when we celebrate milestones, we know we haven’t arrived; there is more to do. And we’re committed to this DEI journey for the long term. We will continue to listen, learn and take action!
