The OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon relies greatly on volunteers for its success. As title sponsor of the race, OneAmerica provides more than 500 volunteers, including employees, friends and family members, out of the more than 1,000 total volunteers who help make the 500 Festival enjoyable for participants and spectators.
Dozens of employees have either participated or volunteered each race since OneAmerica became title sponsor in 2005. It's an event that many OneAmerica employees look forward to each year.
"I really enjoyed my experience working in the water pit, that’s what we call the area where we hand out the Gatorade to the runners on the (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) track," said Amy Knoll (left in the photo above), an Associate Product Marketing Consultant with OneAmerica's Individual Life and Financial Services division. "You just anticipate seeing that first runner go through and then you see these wave of runners pass through. I see people I work with, I see people in my family, I see even friends I didn’t even know were participating. To have 35,000 people pass you in three hours is an amazing experience."
Chris Pohl, who is a General Internal Auditor for OneAmerica, has run the race and volunteered. He says the company's sponsorship shows its involvement in the community.
"In this time of companies really focusing on profit, we focus on profit as a means to an end. It tells us that OneAmerica understands it commitment to our community and it’s an opportunity for OneAmerica to show that commitment, by having 35,000 people out here; by having (OneAmerica CEO and President) Scott (Davison) starting us all off together," Pohl said.
