OneAmerica® asks community to submit clever sayings for iconic signboard

After a one-year hiatus, the OneAmerica signboard with its quirky weekly sayings is coming back to Illinois St. in downtown Indianapolis.

OneAmerica is asking the community to submit clever quips, puns and humorous play-on-words for the signboard’s first message. Topics can range from sports, current events, seasonal and holiday messages. Suggestions should be submitted by midnight on Dec. 30 at oneamerica.com and cannot exceed three lines of 21 spaces each.

In storage during construction of the OneAmerica parking garage [see time lapse video below], the signboard’s first new saying will be selected by employees and unveiled on Jan. 3, 2014.

Poets and jokesters alike can vie for a community basket filled with a mini signboard replica with the winning message, a book of the first 40 years of sayings and tickets for four to the Indiana Repertory Theatre, the Indianapolis Zoo and The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

“The signboards have captured the community’s attention for 55 years,” said OneAmerica Chairman and CEO Dayton Molendorp. “The sayings, submitted by employees and the public, reflect our unique Hoosier-style of humor and remind us to not take life too seriously.”

Landmark photos to flank signboard
Also on Jan. 3, passersby can catch a first glimpse of the thirteen 4x5-foot black and white photographs of notable Indianapolis landmarks by Tyler Hromadka to be displayed in the garage windows. Photos of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis Artsgarden, OneAmerica Tower, Indiana Statehouse and Union Station will be displayed among others.

“We will showcase landmarks and attractions that stand for who we are, where we come from and where we are going as a community,” said Molendorp.

Garage opened in December
The six-floor, 1,234 space parking garage opened to employees in December and will soon feature a skywalk to the OneAmerica Tower. Parking in the garage will also be available to the public for a fee during parades, Colts games and other events throughout the year.
