Standard & Poor’s Affirms Ratings of OneAmerica

Standard & Poor’s (S&P) has affirmed its AA- rating of OneAmerica® and its life insurance companies—American United Life Insurance Company® (AUL) and The State Life Insurance Company®—and maintained its stable outlook. The AA- rating is the fourth highest of 22 possible ratings.

“Our ratings are consistently strong, and this year’s Standard & Poor’s rating affirmation confirms that OneAmerica remains financially sound and built to last,” said OneAmerica President and CEO, Scott Davison.  “We are well positioned to continue growing, attracting new customers, and living up to our nearly 140-year-old reputation for strength and stability.”

In its report, S&P noted: “OneAmerica has a strong competitive position supported by its leading market position in its niche Care Solution line, very strong growth in RS (Retirement Services), and high retention rates. The company holds a No. 1 position in annuity-based LTC (long-term care) and No.2 in the life-based LTC market.”

The report also noted: “The company has also seen good sales growth during the past few years, underpinned by its growing career agency and diversified distribution network. Overall sales grew 27% in 2015, driven by growth in all three of its operating segments.”

The rating agency cited the following other major factors for the affirmation:

Extremely strong financial risk profile, underpinned by extremely strong capital adequacy, an intermediate risk position, and adequate financial flexibility

Extremely strong capital, demonstrated by ‘AAA’ redundancy

Management continues to focus on its mutual status and keeps balance sheet and policyholder protection as its primary objectives, followed by profitable growth

S&P also maintained the OneAmerica enterprise risk management score as “strong.” The organization remains one of only 11 companies in the life insurance industry to receive a score of 'strong' or better.
