Indianapolis, May 12, 2016
The board of directors for OneAmerica announced today that it has elected former Indiana Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann (right in photo) and former Indiana State Rep. Carolene Mays-Medley (left in photo) as its newest members.
“Sue and Carolene are proven leaders who understand how to help an organization grow strategically while staying true to its principles,” said Scott Davison, president and CEO of OneAmerica. “Their wealth of diverse experiences, strong backgrounds in community and organizational development, and finely honed insights will complement and add to the expertise of our board.”
As Indiana’s 50th lieutenant governor, Ellspermann managed five state agencies, including the Office of Energy Development, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, and the Office of Community and Rural Affairs. From 2010 to 2012, she served in the Indiana House of Representatives, representing Warrick, Spencer and parts of Dubois and Perry counties.
“OneAmerica has long been one of our state’s strongest companies, and it has grown to become a nationally recognized industry leader,” said Ellspermann. “I am proud to join the board of directors of this vibrant organization, which is grounded firmly in the same values and guiding principles it has held for nearly 140 years.”
Prior to Ellspermann’s career in public service, she worked in manufacturing; owned a consulting practice that provided problem solving and strategic planning facilitation and training for clients including Kimball International, Pepsi and Microsoft; and founded the University of Southern Indiana’s Center for Applied Research and Economic Development. Ellspermann is a graduate of Purdue University and earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in industrial engineering from the University of Louisville.
Mays-Medley was recently appointed executive director of the White River State Park Development Commission, which oversees 250 acres that include such major attractions as the Indianapolis Zoo, Victory Field, Indiana State Museum, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, and NCAA Hall of Champions, and more. She also serves on Peyton Manning’s PeyBack Foundation board and Child Advocates executive advisory committee, and is a 20-year board member of Indiana Sports Corp.
“OneAmerica is an exceptional organization – an evolving powerhouse in the financial services industry, and also a company of high integrity that values its civic leadership role in Central Indiana. It is a privilege to serve on the board of directors of an organization that embraces principles focused on the best interests of its customers and serving people well,” said Mays-Medley.
Mays-Medley most recently served as a commissioner and vice chairman of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, having been appointed in 2010 by then-Gov. Mitch Daniels and again in 2013 by Gov. Mike Pence. She also served as the elected president of the Mid-America Regulatory Conference, served on the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Water and Washington Action committees, and as chairperson of the NARUC Critical Infrastructure Committee, with a focus on cybersecurity.
Formerly, Mays-Medley was the publisher and president of the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper and Indiana Minority Business Magazine. She served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 2002 to 2008, receiving several Legislator of the Year awards and being honored as one of “Indiana’s Most Influential Women.” Early in her career, she held leadership roles at Occidental Chemical Co. and Mays Chemical Co. Mays-Medley is a graduate of Indiana State University, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in business and marketing, and is currently pursuing a Master of Jurisprudence degree from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
